Plant information:
Calendula officinalis
Sow: March to May / September to October
Harvest: June to October
Bright orange flowers last all summer long and attract a wide range of insects. Flowers are also edible and are a great addition to salads.
Uses:
Sowing instructions:
Seed can be sown in spring or autumn. Start in Jiffy 7C pellets (available here) or seed trays, then pot on into 7cm pots, and again into 9cm before planting out.
Seeds germinate in 14-28 days.
Growing instructions:
Allow at least 30cm between plants. Deadhead plants regularly throughout the growing season to encourage new flowers to grow.
Notes:
Just a fantastic allrounder: great for beneficial insects, bringing colour to pots or borders and you can eat the flowers!
Will freely self-seed if you want it to, just leave the seed heads to ripen.
